The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India administers a prestigious examination known as the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam. It functions as a gateway for individuals who wish to become officers in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force Candidates for various officer training academies, including the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), are selected based on their performance on the CDS Exam, which is administered twice yearly, typically in February and September. Men and women who satisfy the eligibility requirements may apply.
The exam consists of three sections: English, General Knowledge, and (for certain courses) Elementary Mathematics. The English and General Knowledge examinations are common to all candidates, whereas the Elementary Mathematics examination is exclusive to those applying for the IMA, AFA and specific technical positions in the Army and Navy.
The Services Selection Board interview is a comprehensive evaluation process that assesses a candidate’s charisma, leadership qualities, and military aptitude. The final selection is based on both the candidate’s performance on the written examination and the SSB interview. (not required here)

The Notification for the CDS written exam is issued in November and July. UPSC holds the exam in Feb and October. Students can apply for the CDS written examination online only on the UPSC website. For Further Guidance please fill up the Enquiry Form
Educational: Graduates- qualified or appearing (final year) are eligible to sit for the CDS written exam. For Air Force and Navy candidates must have engineering /physics and mathematics subjects. For details check the notification. For OTA, Graduates and final-year students can also apply.
Age: 19 ½ to 24 years on date of joining IMA. For OTA, the age must be between 19 ½ to 25 years on the date of joining.
Sex: Only male candidates can sit for the CDS written exam. Both ladies and men can apply for the OTA exam.
The CDS written exam consists of three papers:
All three papers of the CDS written exam are held on the same day and the duration of each paper is two hours. The papers for the CDS written exam are of 100 marks each and the total of the CDS written exam is of 300 marks.
The OTA Written exam consists of only two of the above-mentioned papers:
OTA Candidates are exempted from the Mathematics exam. The remaining two papers of the OTA written exam are of 100 marks each and the total of the OTA written exam is of 200 marks.
The CDS written exam tests the candidates in diverse fields like English, History, Polity, Economics, Geography, Maths, Life Science, Physics, Chemistry, Current Affairs, GK, etc. For the OTA exam, a syllabus is the same as CDS expect, OTA candidates do not have to sit for mathematics paper. UPSC declares the result of the CDS written exam in 3-4 months after the written exam. The same can be viewed on the UPSC website. It is a competitive exam and there is no fixed cut-off percentage for passing. Candidates who perform better are sent the call letters for SSB interviews. The final merit list is prepared after the SSB interviews and medicals, final result is displayed on the UPSC website.
